Keep A-Goin’

Eleanor Roosevelt  once said:

Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product.

She was so right. Happiness is like a nice cool breeze. It comes along sometimes and makes you say, “Ahhh.” You lift the hair off the back of your neck and let the coolness soothe you. Then, it’s back to work. You keep a-goin’. Eventually, another nice cool breeze will come along.

Thinking that happiness is a goal makes people get divorced, quit jobs, break off friendships, and treat others cruelly. People who just “keep a-goin'” don’t usually do these things unless they are absolutely necessary.

Life is hot and uncomfortable some of the time. Most of the time it’s just routine: keep a-goin.’  Do the laundry. Pay the bills. Take out the garbage. The cool breezes are the  good times: the picnics, the birthday parties, the evenings spent laughing over silly family jokes.

Here’s hoping you catch a cool one today.

Great note. A friend of mine and I were talking about this very same thing yesterday. Too many people are struggling to get to “happy”. They miss the happy along the way.
